A user story can look ready and still be missing important details.

The happy path may be clear. The acceptance criteria may make sense. But once development starts, questions often appear:

  • What if the information is missing?

  • What if the user enters something invalid?

  • What if a dependency fails?

  • What if the user does something unexpected?

Those are edge cases, and when they are discovered too late, they can create rework, defects, and confusion for the team.

In my video, How to Find Edge Cases With AI, I show how AI can help uncover those scenarios earlier.

What Is an Edge Case?

An edge case is a situation that falls outside the normal or expected flow.

For example, imagine this user story:

As a customer, I want to select a delivery time so that I can receive my order when it is convenient for me.

The normal flow is easy to understand. The customer views available times, selects one, and sees it on the order confirmation.

But what happens if:

  • No delivery times are available?

  • The selected time becomes unavailable during checkout?

  • The customer changes the delivery address?

  • The scheduling service is unavailable?

Those scenarios may require clarification before development begins.

How AI Can Help

Instead of asking AI to rewrite your user story, ask it to analyze the story for gaps.

A useful prompt might be:

Review this user story and acceptance criteria. Identify potential edge cases, assumptions, missing business rules, dependencies, and questions the team should discuss before development begins.

You can also ask AI to review the story from different perspectives, such as:

  • Product Owner

  • Business Analyst

  • Developer

  • QA Analyst

Each perspective can surface different concerns.

AI Should Find Questions, Not Make Decisions

This is the most important part.

AI should help identify what may be unclear, but it should not invent business rules.

For example, AI might ask:

What happens if the selected delivery window becomes unavailable?

That is a useful question.

But AI should not decide that the delivery window must be held for 15 minutes unless the team or stakeholders actually confirm that rule.

A good guardrail is:

Do not invent business rules. Clearly identify anything that requires stakeholder clarification.

Turn Edge Cases Into Better Acceptance Criteria

Once the team discusses the edge cases and confirms the expected behavior, the acceptance criteria can be updated.

The workflow is simple:

AI identifies the gap → the team discusses it → the team makes the decision → the backlog item is updated.

That keeps the product team responsible for the decisions while using AI as a thinking partner.

Final Takeaway

Better acceptance criteria are not always about writing more.

They are about asking better questions.

AI can help you surface hidden assumptions, missing business rules, dependencies, and edge cases before they create problems during development.

Use AI to uncover the gaps. Use your team to decide what happens next.
